I get up quite early and decide to explore the town of Guardalavaca, without my luggage. I try to find a nice place to spend the night, but without success. I return to the hotel and have lunch after traveling 40 km. I pack my things and head back towards Guardalavaca. I meet a German man with whom I ride for several kilometers. It's pleasant and easier to ride together.

After a fairly steep climb, my bike got its first flat tire. Luckily, my new friend, a 62-year-old mechanic, helped me out—or rather, changed my inner tube with disconcerting ease. He was my guardian angel! He did the repair at his Cuban friend's house. He's German and was married to a Cuban woman over 10 years ago, but they're now separated. It was lovely to be able to speak Spanish with this generous German.

My guardian angel's friend gave us mangoes and bananas; they were delicious. After the repair, I set off alone again towards the town of Banes. The landscape is very mountainous and beautiful. The climbs and descents come one after another.

I finally arrive in Banes and find a "casa de renta" for 20 CUC. I'm happy to be able to rest a bit after traveling 95 km.

I'm going to eat a good 25-cent pizza and a good 10-cent juice.

Note the cleverness of the Cubans who serve food without disposable plates or cups. A logical and sensible choice.
Tomorrow will be another day...
